The Second Falcon Fest is Saturday, May 31st!

Falcon Fest FunJoin us from 10:30 am – 1:00 pm at Camp Long!
Click here to download maps and information.

The focus of Falcon Fest II is to work collaboratively to describe our visions for Fairmount Park Elementary’s falcon mascot. The final mascot image will need to be something that can be printed on t-shirts, letterhead, folders, etc., so we’ll want to translate the ideas captured in sketches, sculptures, and masks into information about the important concepts for the falcon image.

Together, we will look at all of the art from the first Falcon Fest. If you (kids, parents, and teachers) have other ideas, please bring those with you to add to the display, to increase the breadth of ideas and to inform the conversation. If you cannot attend on Saturday, please email your images and ideas to falconfest@fpepta.org.

The Sketching Station will be upstairs, close to the gallery space, should inspiration strike. Other stations at the event will provide opportunities for kids to work and play together, making falcon art and during activities:

Inspiration Station

The Inspiration Station is back for Falcon Fest II! Come to this quiet place to read books about falcons, raptors, birds of prey, and art — and to study images of falcons.

Gallery of Creations

Surrounded by a display of art from the first Falcon Fest and anything you have created since, we will work together on fine-tuning our ideas about the falcon image, focusing on the three As:

  • Action – What should the falcon be doing? (i.e. flying, swooping, reading…)

  • Attributes – What are some words to describe the falcon? (i.e. cute, fierce, friendly…)

  • Aesthetics – What others ideas are important to the falcon design? (i.e. playful sketch, like a woodblock print, bold lines…)

After gathering ideas, we will have a chance to collaboratively select top concepts for the falcon mascot image.

Falcon Sketches

Sketching Station

If you missed sketching at the first Falcon Fest, or have new ideas, there will be a chance to sketch again. Also, feel free to bring images you created at home, to display in the Gallery of Creations.

School Song Lyrics Brainstorming

Stefan will work with students to gather ideas for the school song. In the fall, our music teacher, Mr. Pendergrass, will share the ideas with the students, as they work together to write a song that will become part of the Fairmount Park Elementary tradition.

Top Secret Falcon Art Project
– (Shhh! Don’t tell the teachers or Ms. Breidenbach) –

Mike is back (!), but instead of wire and awesome tools, he is bringing tiles and materials for making a special mosaic. Please participate in this collaborative mosaic art project that will be presented as a gift to the school at the grand opening party.

Falcon FlyerFlying Falcon Frenzy

Steve and Katy are ready to build some falcon flyers with friends! Please visit them in the outdoor shelter, where kids and adults can create their own falcon flyers and paper airplanes. As time and weather allows, there will be opportunities to test and race the creations in the skies above Camp Long meadow.

Sculpting with Shanti

Help Shanti craft a large-scale papier mache falcon! The form will be prepared in advance, so the students can participate in the gooey fun of adhering the papier mache to the model. The sculpted raptor will need some decorating when it dries, so stay tuned for a summer opportunity to make the falcon fancy.

What’s happens after Falcon Fest?

Falcon Fest Masks

We will compile and synthesize the art and information from both Falcon Fest Creative Collaborations, and will publish images and documents right away — so that anyone who could not attend one or both of the collaborations can add his or her comments as well. The interim PTA board and some planning teachers will work to incorporate ideas and comments into the creation of the falcon mascot image, which must be finalized by the end of June. Let us know if you would like to be involved in the process of refining the falcon mascot image by emailing falconfest@fpepta.org.
