A NOTE FROM MS. BREIDENBACH

The State of Washington requires every public school to have a school improvement plan and to update it yearly. This means that schools must constantly review their data and take steps to ensure that all students meet grade level standards. Our recently completed plan provides an overview of both our instructional strategies and our social/emotional focus for all FPE students.

The first goal was to identify students who need additional support to meet grade level standards. In September teachers assessed all students and identified 53 (students in grades 1-5) to receive extra support from the resource room staff, the bilingual instruction staff, and/or from our reading support instructional assistant. Our goal is that every child will make 12 months’ gain over the upcoming 9 months. A handful of students have already responded positively and are far exceeding the expected gains. This goal reflects our commitment to equity by ensuring that all students achieve their grade level standards.

Our second goal is to continue to focus on core math instruction so that all students score 80% or higher on their end of the year assessment. Our school receives very little discretionary money and can only offer DreamBox for additional math support. I’m a huge fan of DreamBox for all students because it is aligned with grade level expectations. Another strength is that our core instruction and DreamBox use the same standard math terms. For example, we use the term ‘regrouping’ rather than ‘borrowing.’ Regrouping is a more accurate term and is used in all four mathematical operations.

Our third goal is a school climate goal. We used the date collected from last spring’s student surveys to create this goal. 55% of students in grades 3-5 responded positively to a question that asked if students were respectful to each other at school. This percentage is similar to other elementary schools but, it is simply not acceptable at FPE. The first action step will be to gather more information from students. We will probe to find out exactly what students are experiencing. Then we will determine how to respond to this information. Hooray for the PTA volunteers running the annual giving campaign. Because of our PTA we are able to add the hottest new books to the school library, offer a comprehensive art program, and have a school counselor. I can’t imagine not having a counselor or having to eliminate art because we don’t have a budget for supplies. A well- stocked library, an art program, and a counselor significantly impact our ability to meet our school improvement goals and reinforces our commitment to equity.

Last week’s election has prompted many questions from our students. Because access to media is far greater than in prior elections, many students have heard and read things that cause them concern. At FPE we are committed to making sure that every student feels safe, that every family is valued, and that every fear or opinion expressed is handled in a civil and appropriate manner. Whether we have a Republican or Democrat sitting in the Oval Office, public school educators understand the enormous responsibility of ensuring that all students receive the best possible education no matter their citizenship status, ethnicity, gender, family structure, or learning profile.

A reminder that students do not come to school next week. Teachers will be meeting with parents for conferences Monday through Wednesday. Enjoy your Thanksgiving and time with your family and friends. And please keep books in the talons of all of our little Falcons. A week without school is not a week away from learning and reading.

LOST AND FOUND COLLECTION

If you suspect your child might have an item in the lost and found, please check the racks before Thanksgiving. Items left there longer than two weeks will be pulled after that date and will be donated to charity.

Join your peers tonight, 11/17, at school from 6:30-7:30pm. Get the latest updates regarding PTA activity and bring your ideas to the table.

ENRICHMENT CLASSES COMING TO AN END

The last class for most after school Enrichment activities is the week following the Thanksgiving Holiday. Many Wednesday and Friday classes will continue through the week of December 3rd-9th. Karate, Prep and Cantate Choirs remain on their own schedules. Please check in with instructors if you have questions.

Enrichment volunteers are putting together the winter session schedule. It will be released before Winter Break. Registration will happen the second week of January.

FUNDRAISING AND PARENTS NIGHT OUT THIS FRIDAY

November 18th will be a very special fundraiser and parent’s night out. Come to The Georgetown Collection, a wholesale sample reseller, from 4pm-8pm and Counterbalance Brewing Co. from 5pm-9pm.

The Georgetown Collection will donate 10% of the night’s proceeds to FPE PTA as well as donating one book to the FPE Library for every book purchased. Counterbalance will donate $1/pint purchased. It’s sure to be a good time.

DINNER DRIVE SHOPPING LIST

These dinners are collected and distributed to families in need in our immediate Fairmount Park Elementary community, Highland Park community and several other organizations with those in need around WS. Those that are in need in our school community can fill out the right hand side of the announcement and turn it in.

If you are able to provide a dinner for a family, please shop for the following items:

  • $25 grocery gift card for perishable
  • Box of mashed potatoes
  • Three sweet potatoes
  • Graham cracker non-refrigerated pie crust
  • Pumpkin pie mix, one large can
  • Cranberry sauce, one can
  • Box of stuffing mix
  • Kernel corn, one can
  • Green beans, one can
  • Gravy mix, two cans

Dinners should be packed in a brown paper bag and dropped off in the front office at school by Friday, November 18, 2016.

Dinners that are not needed within our school community will be delivered to Highland Park Elementary School.

FPE FOOD DRIVE

Many of us are fortunate not to worry about our next meal. We want to do our part to help families who face that uncertainty. FPEPTA has made it our goal to support those in need in our community. Help us make ‘giving back’ part of our Fairmount Park culture!

Each grade level has taken a week to concentrate their giving. Of course this does not mean you are limited to donating only that week.

Contributions can be placed in the donation bin outside the cafeteria before and after school.

FPEPTA’s 1ST ANNUAL HOLIDAY EXTRAVAGANZA (CRAFT FAIR)

The Fairmount Park 1st Annual Holiday Extravaganza will take place on Thursday, December 1, 2016 from 6:30-8:00pm. Students interested in participating should review this form along with their parents. Completed forms due by November 18, 2016.

FAQs About the Craft Fair

  • Who can sell at the event? All Fairmount Park students can sell at the craft fair.
  • What can be sold at the event? Students may sell any handmade crafts, art or baked goods made mostly by them. Examples: felt projects, drawings, bath soaps, duct tape crafts, homemade cards, cookies, etc.
  • What do I need to bring? Bring your items to sell, money for change, a collection bag or box, bags for packaging, calculator, and decorations for your table.
  • What are my table restrictions? Only use painter’s tape for your setup. Don’t tape anything to the walls or floor. Each participant will get access to a 1⁄2 table and 1⁄2 bench for set up. Please respect the space of your table mate.
  • What are important times/dates for this event? Permission slips are due by November 18th. The event will take place December 1st. Participant setup will be from 6:15-6:30 pm. The event will be from 6:30-8:00 pm.
  • Can my parents drop me off and pick me up at the end of the event? No, an adult must stay on campus throughout the event.
  • Where will my table be located? Participants will draw for their table assignment when they come in to set up.
