The Enrichment Program at Fairmount Park Elementary is a series of after school enrichment classes provided by different companies and individuals (even some parents!), representing a breadth of disciplines — from visual arts to engineering to computer programming to performance arts and beyond.
PTA volunteers have been working hard over the summer to put together another exciting schedule of after school classes! All Fairmount Park Elementary kids are welcome to sign up.

|Model Airplanes 101
Have you ever wondered how airplanes are built? Would you like a better understanding of how they make strong, light structures that can fly? In this focused extension of the Engineering Challenge physical modeling class each student will work individually to build two classic balsa wood models that can either provide a detailed static display or can be covered in tissue to become a real flying model. The objective will be to gain understanding and experience with basic modeling, structural and aerodynamic principals
Each student will take home their models at the end of the class in whatever final form their skill level will allow them to achieve. Previous modeling experience is desired but not necessary.
This class will work with cutting tools and other work methods that require significant dexterity and fine motor skills. Parent volunteers who have or can complete the volunteer paperwork prior to the first class could help expand the offering to more students. Any parent who wishes to volunteer will be granted free tuition for a student taking the class. Some modeling experience is helpful but not necessary to volunteer.
Instructor Mike Ronda is a Fairmount Park Elementary parent, Civil Engineer and Construction Project Manager with the City of Tukwila. He has previously co-taught Engineering Challenge and Rockets 101 at Fairmount Park. He has two 5th graders at FPE. His father and uncle were both master model builders and some of these skills were passed on to Mike. The objective of the class is to introduce to a new generation some of the excitement and satisfaction of building something with your own hands.
Important Class Registration Notes
- Once registration is complete, final confirmation emails will be sent out, and you will be contacted directly by the instructor with any specific information for their class. Please communicate questions, absences, or issues to the instructors directly.
- If paying by cash or check, please ensure payment is made prior to the first class in order for your child to participate.
In order to help with early release times this year, we have extended most enrichment classes to 90 minutes. Please pay attention to your specific class length, as some enrichment classes are just 60 minutes.
This is a new online system! We have tried to ensure a seamless and hassle free registration process. But if you have any issues or questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the volunteer enrichment coordinators via email.
This Enrichment Program is coordinated entirely by volunteer power. We are always looking for others willing to help out. If you are interested in learning more about what this would involve, please contact your PTA via email!
